Hennepin County has launched a partnership with a Florida company that could result in lower prescription and health care costs for residents and a benefit for selected county programs.

The no-cost Coast2Coast Rx card could provide savings of up to 75 percent on tens of thousands of prescriptions with additional savings available on health care services including diabetes supplies, services such as lab and imaging, and vision, dental and hearing care. The program also offers discounts on pet prescriptions and some veterinary care.

Each time the card is used to fill a prescription, $1.25 will be generated for public programs.

Residents can pick up a card from more than 69,000  participating pharmacies nationwide or print one from the Coast2Coast website, www.coast2coastrx.com/counties/mn/hennepin.

Participation has no restrictions on eligibility, so all residents are immediately qualified to use the card, regardless of their age, income or health status.

“Health care costs can place a burden on Hennepin County families,” said County Commissioner Randy Johnson. “We want to help make prescriptions more affordable.”

The program, provided through Financial Marketing Concepts, Inc., of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., can provide medical access to those with or without health insurance. For those who are uninsured or underinsured, it could provide access to the prescriptions and health care services that their families need. Even those with insurance can use the card to help offset the cost of high deductibles. In other cases the card could help relieve the out-of-pocket costs of the Medicare Part D ‘donut hole.’

The partnership creates no additional cost to the county and does not require additional work by county personnel to distribute or market the card. Nonprofit organizations and social service agencies are encouraged to e-mail lforsythe@alarus.biz to request free supplies of cards to distribute to their consumers.

As of today, 300 cities, counties and states have chosen to participate in the program. Hennepin County’s launch was announced at a news conference on June 18 at Hennepin County Medical Center, Blue 1 Pharmacy in Minneapolis.

Rock Island County’s Prescription Discount Card, Coast2Coast Rx, Saves Participating Residents More Than $4 Million Dollars By Fourth Anniversary

 Unique program offers consumers savings while serving as a source of revenue for county

The Rock Island County Board announced today that the county’s free discount prescription program, Coast2Coast Rx, has allowed participating residents to save more than $4.8 million on prescription drugs since its launch just over four years ago in March 2009.

Coast2Coast Rx is a public service available to all residents, with no restrictions on age, health status or income. Constituents can use the card at major chain pharmacies to save up to 75 percent on more than 60,000 name brand and generic prescriptions. Other health care services—including vision, dental and hearing care, diabetes supplies and pet prescriptions and veterinary care—are also available at discounted rates through a network of partner providers.

Neither card users nor the county bear any cost for participating in the program, and it requires no additional work from county personnel. In fact, as County Board Chairman Phillip B. Banaszek explained, the card actually generates revenue for public programs, as each time the card is used to fill a prescription the county receives $1.25 for public programs.

“Board Members voted for Coast2Coast Rx card program to provide a comprehensive resource that would help to address our constituents’ health and financial concerns,” said Chairman Banaszek. “The Coast2Coast Rx card has helped support our residents and fill the gaps left by budgets cuts to health services like the Illinois Cares Rx Program; so combined with the revenue that the county receives for simply using the card, it’s served as a valuable public resource.”

In an effort to distribute the card to as many consumers as possible, Coast2Coast Rx is working with public departments and local nonprofit agencies to increase awareness of the program; and encourages organizations and agencies providing social services to distribute the card to their constituents as a money-saving resource; any organization that would like a free supply of cards to distribute can email their request.

“The Coast2Coast Rx card is a valuable resource—one that offers benefits that can help Rock Island County residents better manage their health by accessing significant savings on prescriptions they need as well as discounts on other health care services,” said Chief Marketing Officer Marty Dettelbach of Financial Marketing Concepts, Inc., the company that provides the discount prescription card.

As there is no membership paperwork required, residents can simply pick up a card from locations around their county or download and print a card at /counties/il/rockisland/. Program aids both residents and community with easy-to-access benefits

The Mobile County Commission announced that the county’s free discount prescription program, Coast2Coast Rx, has saved participating residents more than $4.3 million collectively on their prescriptions—an average of more than $1 million each year since the card launched in May 2010. Mobile was the first among Alabama counties to adopt the program, which has since expanded to more than 40 counties statewide and earned the endorsement of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama.

Residents save an average of 61 percent—with savings of up to 75 percent—on thousands of brand name and generic prescriptions through the Coast2Coast program. “With the current economy and changes to the health care industry, it is more important than ever for consumers to know their options when it comes to saving money on their health care needs,” said Commission President Merceria Ludgood.

Each time the card is used Mobile County receives $1 through the program—a distinguishing feature that contributes to the financial health of the county.

The card is easy to use. “The county’s discount prescription card offers unique benefits that make it an easy-to-use public resource—there is no paperwork, cost or enrollment period,” noted Commissioner Jerry Carl. “And one card can be used for an entire family.”

The card’s benefits are not limited to prescription savings. Through a network of partners, the card can also be used for discounts on diabetic supplies, vision, dental and hearing care and even pet prescriptions and veterinary services. According to Commissioner Connie Hudson, “The County’s program provides reduced prices on health care services through partner programs that demonstrate its value to our uninsured and underinsured constituents.”

Although the card provides the most significant savings to those who pay out-of-pocket for their medications and health expenses, such as the uninsured and those with incomplete coverage under their current plan, it can also help offset the expense of high deductibles and in some cases can even help relieve costs of the Medicare Part D “donut hole.”

“Mobile County is offering an excellent resource for constituents and all residents—not just the uninsured but the underinsured and those with high deductibles,” stated Chief Marketing Officer Marty Dettelbach of Financial Marketing Concepts, Inc., the company that provides the discount prescription card. “The savings in Mobile County reflect just the tip of the iceberg in terms of residents’ potential to utilize this public service.”
