The County of Humboldt announced today that the county’s free prescription discount card, Coast2Coast Rx, has now saved residents over $1 million on the cost of their prescription drugs as the program celebrates its third anniversary.

Since the program’s inception in April 2010, Humboldt County residents have saved an average of 61 percent on prescription medications with savings reaching as high as 75 percent. Further highlighting the impact and importance of the program is the card’s ability to serve as a revenue stream—each time the Humboldt County card is used to fill a prescription, $1.25 is generated for public programs.

Supervisor Mark Lovelace advocated for the County to adopt the Coast2Coast Rx program.

“The Coast2Coast Rx program helps make prescription drugs more affordable for everyone regardless of age, income level, health or insurance status,” he said. “Over the past three years, this program has helped more than 1,800 Humboldt County residents save over $1 million on the cost of their prescription medications. That’s money they can use for other important needs.”

Humboldt County’s Coast2Coast Rx card is free and provides discounts on over 60,000 brand name and generic prescription drugs, with savings of up to 75 percent.

“With these significant discounts, Humboldt County residents have access to options for more affordable prescriptions and health care services,” said Supervisor Lovelace. “When combined with the feature that allows the card to create revenue, this program helps the County fulfill our commitment to provide fiscally responsible services that help improve the quality of life for county residents.”

Not only can the program be a significant cost-saver for consumers who have limited or no insurance coverage, it can also provide relief to those facing high deductibles or costs of prescriptions not covered under their current plan. In some instances the card can be used to offset the Medicare Part D “donut hole.” Through a partner program, consumers can save on health care services including dental, vision and hearing services, diabetes supplies and even veterinary services and pet prescriptions.

“The simplicity of the card and its ease of use further enhance its value,” said Chief Marketing Officer Marty Dettelbach of Financial Marketing Concepts, Inc, the company that provides the cards. “Given that everyone is eligible to use the card and there is no paperwork to fill out, Coast2Coast Rx is a viable and immediate resource for residents.”
